The birth of the scratch-off lottery gameThe scratch cards we are familiar with today have a history that goes back to the 1970s. The concept was developed by American computer scientists John Koza and Daniel Bower in 1974. During the early 70s, Koza had worked for a company that printed bingo cards for U.S. grocery stores. His job was to design computer algorithms that made the bingo cards fair for participants. After he was fired in 1972, Koza realized the concept he'd been using could be applied to the lottery, and he set out to create a new type of lottery game. To help him with the marketing aspects of his entrepreneurial plan, Koza teamed up with a former colleague, Daniel Bower. In 1973, the pair founded the Scientific Games Corporation (SGC).
