Marie Tharp (1920-2006) worked as a geologist at the Lamont Geological Laboratory at Columbia. From the late 1940s she transferred onto paper data from sonars equipping ships exploring the Atlantic, thus creating the first maps of the ocean floor. As the male scientists, and particularly her collaborator Bruce Heezen (1924-1977), and her boss Maurice Ewing (1906-1974), were involved in the work that eventually proved that continents drifted apart, she was the one who first, through this painstaking task of transcribing data, realised there was in mid-Atlantic a ridge from where the ocean floor spreads, pushing apart America from Africa. Tharp and Heezen worked with an Austrian painter, Heinrich Berann (1915-1999), to produce in 1977 the first full map of the ocean floor. Tharp donated her maps to the Library of Congress when she died, and courtesy of this Institution, anyone can now donwload this first map of the ocean floor from the Internet, and admire its precision, as you can see below.

And the excellence of [his] judgement," though flattery was to be expected when addressing a prince. Louis-Auguste's apparent mathematical skills are corroborated by his enjoyment of cartography, which would have required an understanding of scale and projections.[8] He also enjoyed physical activities such as hunting with his grandfather and rough play with his younger brothers, Louis-Stanislas, Count of Provence, and Charles-Philipe, Count of Artois. From an early age, Louis-Auguste was encouraged in another of his interests, locksmithing, which was seen as a useful pursuit for a child.[9]When his father died of tuberculosis on 20 December 1765, the eleven-year-old Louis-Auguste became the new Dauphin. His mother never recovered from the loss of her husband and died on 13 March 1767, also from tuberculosis.[10] The strict and conservative education he received from Paul François de Quelen de la Vauguyon, "gouverneur des Enfants de France" (governor of the Children of France), from 1760 until his marriage in 1770, did not prepare him for the throne that he was to inherit in 1774 after the death of his grandfather, Louis XV. Throughout his education, Louis-Auguste received a mixture of studies particular to religion, morality, and humanities.[11] His instructors may have also had a good hand in shaping Louis-Auguste into the indecisive king that he became. Abbé Berthier, his instructor, taught him that timidity was a value in strong monarchs, and Abbé Soldini, his confessor, instructed him not to let people read his mind.[12]Marriage and family lifeMarie Antoinette, queen of France and wife of Louis XVI, with their three eldest children, Marie Thérèse, Louis-Charles and Louis-Joseph (by Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, 1787)On 19 April 1770, at the age of fifteen, Louis XVI married the fourteen-year-old Archduchess Maria Antonia of Austria, his second cousin once removed and the youngest daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and Empress Maria Theresa.[13]This marriage was met with hostility from the French public. France's alliance with its traditional enemy Austria had pulled the country into the disastrous Seven Years' War, in which it was defeated by the British and the Prussians, both in Europe and in North America. By the time that Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were married, the French people generally disliked the Austrian alliance, and Marie Antoinette was seen as an unwelcome foreigner.[14] For the young couple, the marriage was initially amiable but distant. Louis XVI's shyness and, among other factors, the young age and inexperience of the newlyweds. Marie Curie Pierre and Marie Curie in the laboratory, demonstrating the experimental apparatus used to detect the ionization of air, 1904. Marie Curie, born Maria Salomea Skłodowska in Warsaw, Poland, on November 7, 1867, was a physicist and chemist renowned for her groundbreaking research in radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and only the fourth person (and second woman) to win a Nobel Prize across two different disciplines, physics and chemistry. Marie's upbringing revolved heavily around education, she attended illegal underground classes during the repressive period of Russian occupation. Despite this setback, she obtained her degrees in mathematics and physics at the University of Paris-Sorbonne. It was here where she met her future husband, Pierre Curie, who would later become her scientific collaborator. Together they discovered two new chemical elements, radium, and polonium, and coined the term radioactivity. Marie earned international notoriety for being the first woman to receive a doctorate in science from Sorbonne University and winning her first Noble Prize with Pierre for their work on radioactive substances, an accomplishment not seen before or since. After Pierre's passing, Marie became a professor at Sorbonne University, becoming one of France's leading researchers into radioactivity while also campaigning for women's rights within academia. In 1911, Marie received a second Noble Prize—this time alone—for her discovery of two new elements, radium, and polonium, which ignited a global interest in studying radioactivity. During WWI, Marie set up mobile x-ray stations. Education Community; Explainers; Interactives; Newsletter; Contact; Media; News from the Columbia Climate School. Marie Tharp. On Monday, Veteran’s Day, here in America, we honor those who serve in the US armed forces. The SOLIDWORKS Military Veterans Program (MVP) allows US veterans to obtain SOLIDWORKS for educational purposes through the SolidWorks Military Veterans Education store.US Veterans can obtain a copy of SOLIDWORKS at a discounted rate and a DD214 form. This year, the SOLIDWORKS EDU team got to visit Workshops for Warriors in San Diego California, an organization that is rebuilding America’s advanced manufacturing workforce by a rigorous skills based training program with the latest technology. These Veterans work hard to become highly skilled and certified in MasterCam, Welding, SOLIDWORKS and other job skills. The complete story is here.In 2009, a young Veteran came to us and asked for a copy of SOLIDWORKS.He wanted to keep his skills up for his employer during deployment. Months later, we received a flag flown for SolidWorks. We have received many thank you cards and plaques of the years from students – but this was an honor I never expected.I have to thank my colleagues Chris and Adam for making the MVP program happen. The space between art and engineering is extremely small. Geometric sculptor, David Colbert, uses SolidWorks to inspire young and old with Geometry.David uses SolidWorks in the following ways: designing sculpture; 3-D printing; and making animations based on a space-filling grid.Examples can be found on his website.David learned of SolidWorks in 2002. He met a kindly professor, Paul Kieffer, at Naugatuck Valley Community College, in Connecticut. Paul was intrigued that an artist, one who hardly knew how to use a computer at the time, wanted to join his engineering students.Soon he stopped making David attend class and instead offered private tutorials. Paul assigned his most advanced students the job of building the Platonic Solids within SolidWorks. I remember Paul talking to me about this student (David) such a long time ago when I was teaching at Mass Bay Community College.David’s work is now featured in museums and galleries and he continues to see SolidWorks as an inspiration in teaching Geometry. You can find out more about David work, his current showings, animations and designs here.David, thank you for sharing with the SolidWorks Community.
