May 2019: New Caedium Release and Tutorials It is finally time to announce the new release of Caedium v6.0, headlined with the addition of Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) and Passive Species Transport. I know it has been a while, but some things take time and are the worth the wait - I hope this release is one of those things. In support of the new features are two new tutorials to get you started with CHT.Conjugate Heat Transfer Through a Water-Air RadiatorSimulation shows air temperature iso-surfaces Enhanced CFD Simulations with Conjugate Heat Transfer and Passive Species Transport The highlight of the latest Caedium (v6.0) release is an enhanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) heat transfer capability with multi-domain support for fluids and solids, known as Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT). This screencast shows an entire simulation performed using our Caedium Professional add-on; starting with geometry creation, motion specification, and physics definition, and finishing with transient 3D pressure coefficient contours on the wing surface. Using our intuitive drag-and-drop tools you'll see how simple and easy it is to simulate air flow within our Caedium unified simulation environment.ScreencastTry For YourselfNote the screencast uses an old version of Caedium (formerly SymLab), so if you want to follow along prior to starting the example you'll need to: Right-click on the View Window (view) background, double-click sim, and then select Properties from the menu. Select the Simulation tab in the Properties Panel. Expand the Time property and change the Duration to 10 s.Ignore the Transient tool on the Physics Tool Palette which has been removed. Instead select Substance->Air on the Physics Tool Palette and then in the Properties Panel set the State properties as follows:Compressible = NoHeat Transfer = NoRotational = NoTransient = YesViscous = NoFor a similar simulation try the detailed tutorial "Flow Over an Airfoil."The sym project file for this example can be viewed in Caedium. This animation, created by Caedium Professional, shows a transient multiphase CFD simulation of water filling a tank that is initially filled with air. The free surface is shown as blue for the air-side surface and red for the water-side surface. Each frame of the animation was automatically rendered by POV-Ray (a ray-tracer) through Caedium.Try CFD YourselfAre you ready for a 30-day free trial of Caedium Professional?Multi-Block TopologyFor such a simple geometry it is worth the extra effort to produce a multi-block hexahedra mesh. This means constraining the geometry during construction to be volumes with 6 faces. Once complete the multiple volumes can then be connected at common faces to form a continuous flow domain.Multi-Block TopologyHexahedra MeshWith a constrained multi-block topology the meshing can then produce hexahedra cells. Typically hexahedra are more accurate for CFD simulations compared to other element shapes.Multi-Block Hexahedra MeshMovie MakingRather than post process a huge amount of flow data (there were 600 frames in the movie) after the simulation was finished to create the movie, Caedium simultaneously initiated each frame render in POV-Ray while the simulation was running.POV-Ray FrameFor comparison a native (non-ray traced) render of the same frame is shown below:Native OpenGL FrameMoreCheckout Caedium tutorials on:Multi-block topology construction at "Water Tank"Movie creation for a tank filling simulation at "Transient Water and Air Flow in a Tank"See "POV-Ray" for instructions on using it to render movie frames in Caedium.Caedium v5.0.0 Released
Electronics Cooling Fluid Comparison Study Your choice of cooling fluid for an electronic device, can have a profound effect on its overall design and operation costs. So it's interesting to note that recent cooling strategies for computers include immersion of the entire computer in mineral oil as a cost-effective alternative to traditional air cooling. Which strategy do you pursue? Let CFD guide your decision - it is easy to switch the cooling fluid in a Caedium CFD simulation so you can make easy comparisons.Caedium CFD Electronics Cooling SimulationMineral oil streamlines colored by temperature CFD Analysis of a Sail Yacht from SketchUp A sail yacht is a great example of an aerodynamic vehicle that relies totally on the wind for propulsion. And you guessed it, where there's aerodynamics there's also an opportunity for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to make an impact. CFD has been a primary tool in the aerodynamic optimization of many recent sail yachts. This is especially true in competitive sail yacht design, such as the yachts that compete for the America's Cup. If your budget doesn't extend to the scale of Larry Ellison's then fear not, you can still benefit from CFD analysis of your yacht design in combination with Google SketchUp and Caedium Professional.Streamlines Around a Sail Yacht Aerodynamic Study of a Kyosho Mini-Z RC Model Racecar Kyosho Mini-Z RC model racecars are 1/27 scale and race at speeds up to 10 m/s. Fernando Freitas races them as a hobby and was wondering about the effect of aerodynamics on his car's performance. Fernando was aware of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and thought it might help him satisfy his curiosity. At the same time Fernando came across Caedium Professional and, with a free 30-day trial, set to work. Fernando remarked:"I found it [Caedium] to be extremely useful and. Caedium Professional in Action Richard Smith's blog Here Come The Drones Submitted by Richard Smith on July 24, 2015 - 15:43 It used to be that to design and build a flying machine was an expensive endeavor, what with pilots, wind tunnel tests, prototypes, etc. Not any more though - welcome to the brave new world of Unmanned Autonomous Systems (UAS) or Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles (UAV) or, more popularly, simply drones. How did we get to this point and where is it going? Just like the aerodynamic transformation of Formula 1 (F1) that took place in the 1960s, cycling is now pre-occupied with all things aero. Unlike F1 the concern for cycling is to minimize drag, whereas the realization in F1 was that downforce, not drag, was the key to improved performance.State-Of-The-Art Aero Road Bike Richard Smith's blog CFD Support Worth Paying For Submitted by Richard Smith on July 8, 2015 - 12:42 Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software is not like other desktop applications, such asComments
